Be Prepared to Work When Packing for a Move

Whether you’re moving to a new state or just across town, relocating is a lot of hard work, especially if you have a family and an entire house of belongings to move. Relocating can be made easier by following these helpful tips for packing for a move.

Packing for a Move Should Happen Ahead of Time

The day of your move, or even the week before, is not the time to begin packing. As soon as you learn there is a move in your future, start the process by gathering supplies and decluttering your home.

Declutter and Downsize

Decluttering is helpful anytime, but especially before moving homes. Get rid of items you no longer use or that you don’t want. Fewer items will help packing go faster.

Sort belongings in three piles: items to donate, trash, and things you will keep. As you sort your things, take out the trash as soon as it fills up. Put boxes of donation items in your car and drop them off the next time you run errands.

Pack Infrequently Used Belongings First

When boxing up your belongings, start off with the things you won’t need in the immediate future. Books and movies can be put away without you really missing them. Clothing and sporting equipment that isn’t in season can also be packed. Trophies, collectibles, vacation souvenirs, and photo albums are things you won’t use every day that can be packed up early.

If you’re moving with children, it may be tough convincing them to choose items to pack. Help young kids by asking them to set aside special belongings they don’t want to box up too soon. You might be able to talk them into packing less important belongings, like clothing, and then work up to packing toys, games, and books.

Have Your Kids Help

To make the move less daunting, get the kids to pitch in. Their contributions might be limited to packing up their bedrooms, but that can be a major help for you. Children accumulate toys quickly and you don’t want to be transporting more than is necessary.

To help with the moving process, talk to your children about donating toys they no longer play with. If your kids are too young to pack an entire room on their own, give them smaller projects. Kids can easily pack all the books from a bookshelf or have them pack a box of the dog’s toys and treats.

Prepare For Moving Day

You and your family can have a successful moving day when everyone knows their role and is ready for the move. Tell your kids when moving day is coming and let them decide how they can be helpful.

Hire a babysitter or ask a friend to watch toddlers, but let older children assist in the process. Have plenty of snacks available during the day, take frequent breaks for water, and be prepared in case of rain.

Moving day doesn’t have to be stressful. With these tips, you can prepare for your move and stay focused. Being ready for the big day makes the process easier on yourself and your family.
