When we opened the first inspection service in Raleigh in 1980, virtually no one had even heard of a home inspection or commercial building inspection. Today, almost every purchase includes an inspection, and we are proud to have been part of introducing this valuable service to the area. Our team of five licensed inspectors has performed more inspections – over 35,000 – and we have been in business longer than anyone else in North Carolina. When inspectors became licensed in the early 1990’s then-Governor Jim Hunt appointed Steve Smallman to the first NC Home Inspector Licensure Board, and during 7 years of service on that Board Steve helped write the Standards of Practice for NC inspectors, and write the Inspector Examination that all prospective inspectors must pass to be licensed.
No matter how many inspections we’ve done, we never forget:
the most important one is the one we do for you!
We are construction professionals, but we are also homeowners and real estate investors, and we know how important this service is to you.
OUR HOME INSPECTORS
Our inspectors have performed over 35,000 inspections since we introduced home inspections to North Carolina in 1980. No one has more experience or knows local conditions better than SSPI inspectors.
Lead inspector and company owner Steve Smallman was the first full-time, ASHI-certified home inspector in the Triangle, beginning in 1980. He was a member and past-chairman of the N.C. Home Inspector Licensure Board and was instrumental in the licensing of home inspectors. He chaired the committees that established the state-mandated Standards of Practice, and the home inspector Licensure Examination.
Trip has been a full-time home inspector in the Triangle area since 1998. Prior to that he was a residential and commercial construction superintendent, and has years of hands-on construction experience. Trip has extensive experience with old houses as well as newer ones, and also does termite inspections and radon gas testing.
Bill was inspecting homes in North Carolina before there was a home inspection industry, then spent over 20 years as a home builder. He too is qualified to perform termite inspections and radon gas tests.
Gary is now in his 13th year as a full-time home inspector, and until he joined SSPI he served as Area Manager, supervising a team of eight home inspectors, for the Triangle division of a large national inspection company. Gary has performed or supervised over 8,000 home inspections.
Mike has 20 years of experience as a home builder, remodeler, developer, and home inspector. His hand-on building experience brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the home inspection, and he is also qualified to do termite inspections and radon gas testing.
