4 Ways to Heat Your Home Efficiently
Schedule Your Inspection
As winter approaches, we all want a warm, comfortable home and a heating bill that won’t break the bank. Fortunately, there are some simple strategies to make the most of your heating system each winter. Here are four things you can do right now to help heat your home efficiently.
Heat Your Home Efficiently with the Sun
Just as you close blinds in the summer to keep the house cool, open them to let the sunlight in to help warm your home this winter. Leave south-facing blinds open during the day so your home can benefit from the natural warmth. Once the day turns to night, close your blinds or curtains.
Close Off Unused Rooms
Most of us have a room in the house that doesn’t get used very often, like a guest room or a formal dining room. Whatever the space, don’t waste money heating an unoccupied room. Close the door and its vents to keep your heat flowing only where you need it.
Circulate the Air to Heat Your Home Efficiently
No matter how good your heating system is, you will have areas of the house that are cooler than others. Spaces on north-facing corners will usually be colder, while rooms with extra heat like the oven or the dryer will typically be a few degrees higher.
Leave your thermostat’s fan setting at ‘on’ instead of ‘auto’ to keep air circulating through the house at all times, which will help to average out the temperature. Also, keep your ceiling fans running clockwise in winter to help push warm air from the ceiling back down into the room.
Keep Your HVAC System in Top Shape
No amount of advice will help you heat your home efficiently if the system itself is in bad shape. Worn parts, dirty filters, and outdated technology impact energy-efficiency. Each fall, schedule a service call from your heating and cooling contractor.
They’ll replace filters, check for potential problems, and clean the system to keep it efficient and operational. The improved airflow will keep the system from working so hard to provide warm air. The cleaning has the added bonus of reducing allergens and dust in your home.
It’s always good to learn about opportunities to heat your home efficiently. The more of these strategies you incorporate, the better you’ll feel about your energy bill this winter.
